Real Ales in Sussex

Sussex has plenty to offer those real ale drinkers who love a good pint. With a dramatic growth in microbreweries and craft beers around the region, many village pubs, restaurants and farm shops offer some tantalising brews to tingle the tastebuds.

Villages such as East Dean on the South Downs coast offer award-winning brews, made in the village by Beachy Head Brewery.  Sample a 'Legless Rambler', go in search of Sherlock - a blue plaque marks one if his famous locations, and watch the sunset from the village green.

Jamie Oliver: Huckle-My-Buff

Huckle-My-Buff is a hot drink combining gin or cognac with beer, dating back to early 18th century.

Said to be the worlds first cocktail this combination of eggs, brandy, beer, sugar and nutmeg was served in pubs across Sussex.

Channel 4 series, ‘Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast’ sees Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty explore this forgotten Sussex cocktail and attempt to bring it back into the 21st century. Help was on hand in the form of Harveys Head Brewer, Miles Jenner.

Make your own! Huckle-My-Buff recipe...

 

Ingredients: 

Fresh egg yolk

Harvey's Porter (150ml)

Cognac (35ml)

Muscovado sugar syrup (20g)

Ginger juice (0.8ml)

Freshly grated nutmeg (garnish)

Method:

Slowly blend all ingredients together then warm in a saucepan, gently stirring with a whisk. Pour into a warm glass and finish off with some grated nutmeg.
